SnakeNet
Top 25 of 2003
Picking
a definitive top album for any year is difficult, but especially
in 2003. SnakeNet polled 11 of our members and staff for the top
album of the year and we came up with 11 different answers. We
deliberated, argued and trashed each other's choices for three
weeks before finally agreeing on this list. Any "Best Of"
lists like this are going to have their flaws. Any time you have
a group trying to reach a concenus opinion the mob rules, so many
people had their top picks left off of the list. No one was 100%
happy, but everyone, even our resident curmudgeon Bear, thought
the list was good enough to put their name on.
Apart
from exerting my influence over the results by selecting the judges,
this list was generated with everyone having an equal vote in
the results. For a complete list of our who our panelists are
and what their individual top 10s were, check out the Supreme
Ruling Council page.

Determining
The Top 25 ...
As
I mentioned above, coming up with this list took a long fucking
time. We generated one list, but everyone hated it, so we scraped
it and started again. The whole procedure was very complicated,
but the way it basically worked was that the members of our "Supreme
Ruling Council" were first asked to list their top 20 albums
of the year and then based on which albums received the widest
support, we held a run-off to pick our top 25 of the year.
So
here is the list. Next to each album we list who showed the strongest
support for that particular release and some comments from the
deliberations. Take them for what they are worth...the opinions
of eleven assholes. Enjoy!

Katatonia |
Viva
Emptiness |
Peaceville |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Rev, Brack, Iron Maiden, Crimson, Bear, Jewel Throne |
| Opposed:
Dismembered Carcass |
|
The
majority opinion written by Rev: My
album of the year, I first heard it on the 137/Blatant Disarray
tour and bought it the day I got home. Very solid album...
Added
by Bear:
Look up the word evolution in the dictionary and you'll see
a picture of Katatonia. This band has never released the same
album twice and just can't get boring.
|
|
The
opposing opinion written by Dismembered Carcass: Isn't
Grunge supposed to be dead? I hope the facial tic I developed
from listening to this will go away sometime soon. If you
like your "Metal" served with plenty of syrup on top this
is the disc for you.
Metal
Priestess: I
didn't even like this album, I thought the lyrics were terrible,
the vocal patterns were annoying, and for some reason it irritated
me to death. Viva every album other than this one.

Vital
Remains |
Dechristianize |
Century
Media |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Xena, Jewel Throne, Snake, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Bear |
| Opposed:
Crimson, Iron Maiden |
|
The
majority opinion written by Jewel Throne: I
have to say this is the best release since Into Cold Darkness.
Vital have found their fire again, and it showed on this album.
Words
From Dismembered Carcass: What
amazes me most about this album is how there is no lull in
intensity on any track. It is a ferocious onslaught from beginning
to end.
Supporting...sorta
Bear: Though
I would never put it this high, there is some great music.
The production on this album kills it, no consistency and
the lows drop out for solos and many vocal stanzas. Production
makes this album have no balls. .
|
|
|
| 3. |
Summon |
...And
The Blood Runs Black |
Moribund
|
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Stark, Bear, Jewel Throne, Xena |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Metal Priestess |
|
The
majority opinion written by Bear: Great
release, as with their last album they are thoroughly set
in death metal again with a bit of blackened flair. By far
their best sounding album and could be their best.
Added
by Snake: On
the way to Milwaukee Metalfest, I listened to this album so
loud that it liquefied the wax in my ears. These guys are
seriously underrated. Cool album cover too! You can't go wrong
with fire and a pentagram on black background. heh
heh
Jewel Throne Adds:
It's a great black metal release and became a favorite of
mine in 2003.
...and Xena adds her insight on the band:
I've toured with Summon and partied with them and they helped
make me the alcoholic I am today!
|
|
|
| 4. |
Enslaved |
Below
the Lights |
Osmose |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Bear, Stark, Dismembered Carcass |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Snake |
|
The
majority opinion written by Bear: This
album drops the more Pink Floydish influences of Monumension
and goes back towards the progressive black metal style of
"Eld." Another band that can do no wrong, black metal that
wears its 70's prog influences on its sleeve. Just plain impressive.
Added
by Dismembered Carcass:
If I can hear a flute intro and still be interested in hearing
what is next, that should tell you something about the musical
genius of a band.
|
|
The
opposing opinion written by Snake:
I have heard a lot of wonderful things about this album, but
it seems over-hyped to me. I listened to it a few times and
thought quite a bit of it sucked...SERIOUSLY sucked....and
there aren't a lot of metal albums I would say that about.
I did give it a chance, but after
the third listening I put it on the shelf next to Enemies
of Reality.

 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Stark, Bear, JewelThrone, Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Rev |
| The
majority opinion written by Bear: This
band is one of the most interesting bands out there right
now. No blackened thrash band has displayed their song
writing ability and has so much energy in their music.
Sure, its only an MCD, but it easily destroys most of
the full lengths released this year. |

|
|

| 6. |
Goatwhore |
Funeral
Dirge For The Rotting Sun
|
Rotten
Records |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Rev, Bear, Dismembered Carcass |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, JewelThrone |
| The
majority opinion written by Dismembered Carcass: A
hybrid disc that oozes Metal from every pore, Funeral Dirge
is a masterpiece. This release will make you bang your head,
pump your fist, throw horns, stab a christian or react however
you do when you hear great music. |
|
The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: I
think this band blows goat nuts. I've never seen the big deal
about this band. I find them very lame.
|
|
|
| 7. |
Iron
Maiden |
Dance
Of Death |
EMI |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Rev, Dismembered Carcass, Iron Maiden, Crimson |
| Opposed:
Brack, Metal Priestess, Jewel Throne |
| The
majority opinion written by Crimson: The
best Maiden studio album since the 80's. I guess that tells
you a lot... |
|
The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: The
songs were good, but the production was piss poor. The guitars
override everything and it comes out sounding like a horror
show.
Brack:
Never cared to listen to anything after
Seventh Son...
|

| 8. |
Carpathian
Forest |
Defending
The Throne Of Evil |
Season
Of Mist |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Jewel Throne, Stark, Bear, Snake |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Xena, Rev |
| The
majority opinion written by Stark: Another
cold, moody, dirty, evil masterpiece. I love how Carpathian
Forest unrelentingly drags you through the underworld with music
that is alternately eerie and raucous. |
|
|
|

| 9. |
King
Diamond |
The
Puppet Master |
Metal
Blade |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Crimson, Jewel Throne,
Rev, Xena |
| Opposed:
Brack, Metal Priestess, Snake, Stark |
The
majority opinion written by
Jewel Throne
: King Diamond's albums have always been
pretty consistent. But when I heard this album, it floored me.
Musically and lyrically, this is really his best album since
Conspiracy.
Added by Xena: While House of God
did not impress me this album floored me. He made up for lost
time. |
|
The
opposing opinion written by Snake: Listening
to this album left me with that "not so fresh" feeling
and a stale scent in my nostrils. If you are into King Diamond,
I am sure it's great. For the average fan, I'd say it's an
average album.
Added
by Stark:
When I listen to this album I imagine him phoning it in from
poolside in Maui.

Marduk |
World
Funeral |
Regain

 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Metal Priestess, Jewel Throne, Dismembered Carcass, Bear |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Rev |
| The
majority opinion written by Bear: Decent
album got a few spins from me. Thoroughly puts Marduk in the
death metal genre, but, of course, with that black metal attitude.
|
|
The
opposing opinion: No one dares
speak ill of Marduk. :D
|
|
|
| 11. |
Blood
Red Throne |
Affiliated
With The Suffering |
Hammerheart |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Metal Priestess, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Snake, Bear |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Rev, Xena, JewelThone |
|
The
majority opinion written by Bear: Very
brutal Florida sounding death metal... from Europe. Tchort
and company deliver sheer brutality with this release, definitely
their best material thus far.
Added
by Dismembered Carcass:
The first time I heard this I was immediately transported
back to the glory days of Morrisound. BRT have now emerged
as leaders in the DM genre and I look for them to stay that
way for a long time.
|
|
The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: Perfect
name for this album, because once you hear it, you start suffering
from the agonizing boredom. They sound like a death metal
band from Florida. Why would I want to hear a band like this?
I have plenty of albums by death metal bands from Florida,
and they are better than this garbage.

Swallow

The
Morning Never Came |
Firebox
Records |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Crimson, Iron Maiden, Brack, Rev, Stark |
| Opposed:
Dismembered Carcass, Snake, Xena, Jewel Throne, Metal Priestess
|
|
The
majority opinion written by IronMaiden: My
pick for album of the year. Impressive debut album from a
band. I like the way they're mixing doomy sound and growling
vocals.
Added by Crimson:
Absolutely fabulous debut album!
|
|
The
opposing opinion written by Xena: Swallow
your son?! Isn't that what Michael Jackson usually says to
his house guest parent's?
Added
by Snake: Fine
album, but not a top 25 in my opinion.
From
Crimson: Damn,
just listen to the album.
Added
by Snake: I
did, man! It just didn't rise above the white noise level
of all the stuff I hear. I might look back on this album and
see all the greatness you and the others do, but to me, it
didn't stand out..

Ajattara |
Kuolema |
Spinefarm |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Metal Priestess, Snake, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Iron Maiden,
Crimson |
| Opposed:
Brack, Rev, Xena, Jewel Throne |
| The
majority opinion written by Iron Maiden: This
album is not something one would call "easy listening", it's
a good album though. Bonus is if you understand the lyrics.
|
|
|
| 14. |
Einherjer |
Blot |
Tabu |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Rev, Bear, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Iron Maiden |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Metal Priestess, Jewel Throne, Xena |
| The
majority opinion written by Snake: When
I get tired of listening to really brutal stuff, this album
is a nice break while still employing harsh vocals. Very catchy
riffs. Easily their best release ever! Dead
Knight's Rite kicks serious ass. |
| The
opposing opinion written by Brack: Not
my kind of music. |
|
|
| 15. |
Nevermore |
Enemies
Of Reality |
Century
Media |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Xena, Jewel Throne, Rev, Dismembered Carcass, Iron Maiden, Crimson,
Brack |
| Opposed:
Metal Priestess, Bear, Snake, Stark |
| The
majority opinion written by Xena:
The lyrics and music are great.I admit that Dead heart was better
but Loomis did a stellar job of taking the guitar duties once
again. He writes killer riffs and leads.Warrel once again sends
chills down the back with his vocals. |
|
The
opposing opinion written by Bear: Now
this is my biggest disappointment of the year. Sure it has
its moments and it is pretty original sounding, being that
it sounds like death metal with clean vocals, but its just
not top 20 worthy in my book.
Metal Priestess added: Enemies
of Reality sucked my girl balls...
|
|

| 16. |
Evergrey |
Recreation
Day |
Inside
Out |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Crimson, Iron Maiden, Bear, Stark, Brack, Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Dismembered Carcass, Snake, Xena, Jewel Throne, Rev |
|
The
majority opinion written by Metal Priestess:
My album of the year. It's been a long time since a band grabbed
me by the grill and tossed me on my ass. The vocals and lyrics
are both definitive and moving and you cant help but bang
your head along to their almost frighteningly catching riffs.
All Hail Evergrey!
Says Brack....:
Of
the stuff I solely checked for this poll, Evergrey was the
most appealing.
|
| The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: I
thought it was pretty standard power/speed metal. Nothing new
or groudbreaking....though the song "Blinded" was fairly good.

Kreator |
Live
Kreation |
SPV |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Brack, Stark, Metal Priestess, Jewel Throne, Xena, Crimson |
| Opposed:
Snake, Dismembered Carcass, Iron Maiden, Bear, Rev |
| The
majority opinion written by Jewel Throne: This
is one well put together package. I have the limited edition
box set version, and when I got it, it was just amazing. Kreator
really went all out for this. Great selection of songs. Every
period of Kreator is represented here. A must for fans of Kreator.
|
| The
opposing opinion written by Dismembered Carcass:
Outstanding live album reminiscent of Live After Death for its
ability to stand up to a studio album. Still, its a live album
so I left it off my list. |
|
|
| 18. |
Amorphis |
Far
From The Sun |
Virgin |
|
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Bear, Rev, Iron Maiden, Crimson, Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Snake, Jewel Throne, Xena, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Brack |
The
majority opinion written by IronMaiden: I've
always like Amorphis and this album was no exception. Not as
good as their earlier material but still pretty solid album.
Added by Crimson: It seems like it does
not matter what Amorphis does, it is always good! |
|
The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: I'm
surprised people still care about this band. Their best days
are well behind them. I guess they don't realize that yet.
Oh well, they'll learn soon enough.
Dismembered Carcass adds: The
Karelian Isthmus is an outstanding album. Whatever happened
to that band anyway?
Snake replies: They died and
went to be with Jesus.
Another opposing opinion written by Stark : They
lost me on this one. I couldn't find one interesting or redeeming
thing about it. Maybe I could if this was 1975 and I smoked
a lot of weed.
Quipped
Snake: Nah. Trust
me on this, Denise....I smoked a lot of weed and in 1975,
and you would have much preferred Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Dismembered Carcass, Xena, Jewel Throne |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Rev, Metal Priestess, Stark |
|
The
majority opinion written by Jewel Throne: It
took me a couple of listens until I really appreciated this
album. It is a good album with all kinds of killer riffs.
Dismembered
Carcass agrees saying: Their best album
since The Years Of Decay
|
| The
opposing opinion written by Metal Priestess: Overkill
have really overstayed their welcome. |

 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Stark, Snake, Bear, Xena, Jewel Throne, Dismembered Carcass,
Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Brack, Crimson, Iron Maiden, Rev |
|
The
majority opinion written by Bear: Sure
its not the 2-3 riffs per song of their early work, but they
just don't want to get stagnant as they continue to show that
minimalism can evolve.
|
| Added
by Dismembered Carcass: Song 1-7:Drink
Beer, Nod Head, Pump Fist. Repeat as necessary. |

Roadrunner |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Brack, Rev, Iron Maiden, Jewel Throne, Crimson |
| Opposed:
Snake, Metal Priestess, Bear, Dismembered Carcass, Xena, Stark |
| The
supporting opinion written by Jewel Throne: Overall
this was a big improvement from World Coming Down which I thought
was a below par album. But this one was better in the songwriting
department. |
| The
opposing opinion written by Snake: I
think it is no where near as good as World Coming Down. It's
not that it is a bad
album, but like with Maiden, Nevermore and King Diamond's
new ones, if I want to hear Type O, I'm gonna listen to something
else. |
|
|
| 22. |
Zyklon |
Aeon |
Candlelight |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Dismembered Carcass, Bear, Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Crimson, Brack, Iron Maiden, Rev, Jewel Throne, Xena, Stark |
| The
majority opinion written by Bear: When
I first heard this album I was not only surprised, but unimpressed.
After giving it some listens I realize this is one of the best
American sounding death metal releases in the past couple of
years. In my opinion now, it kills their first album. They could
still drop some of the industrial crap at the end of some songs.
|
| The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: This
band is a little over hyped. I find nothing remotely special
about them. Song writing style is ho-hum. Nothing that grabs
me. If they vanished from the scene, it will be no great loss,
but a welcomed one. |

Unique

 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Dismembered Carcass, Xena |
| Opposed:
Crimson, Brack, Iron Maiden, Rev, Jewel Throne, Metal Priestess,
Stark |
|
The
majority opinion written by Dismembered Carcass: After
being disappointed with Mark of the Legion I was blown away
by this album. This is their most thorough and balanced album
they have ever written and should be a staple in a DM collection.
Added by Xena: This
is another brutaly sick album. Vocals from the depths of hell
and great guitar riffs. It's definately one of their best
to date. Although I wouldn't say it is as brutal as Vital
remains and Summon, it's still a sick and brutal CD.
|
|
The
opposing opinion written by Jewel Throne: I've
never once liked this band. They are quite boring. The song
writing is total drivel. I get more entertainment by watching
dust fly around a room than listening to this. People call
them brutal. I think seeing two old people kiss is more brutal
than this band.
Snake retorts: What could possibly be
more brutal then watching two old people kissing? You're confusing
me here, JT!
Added by Metal Priestess: "BRRROOOOTAL
GUY, THESE GUYS ARE BROOOOOOTAL"....Brutally awful. I've seen
better writing on the walls of a bathroom stall in downtown
Boston.
Snake retorts again...: Yeah...that
is probably because all those BloSox fans have so much free
time on their hands. Every off season they have nothing to
do except work on perfecting their shithouse poetry. I guess
if the Deeds of Flesh guys have trouble selling albums now,
they can blame it on "The Curse of the PAMbino"!
AH HA HA HA HA!

Candlelight |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Stark, Dismembered Carcass, Metal Priestess |
| Opposed:
Crimson, Brack, Iron Maiden, Rev, Jewel Throne, Bear, Xena |
| The
majority opinion written by Snake: When
I brought this out to the car to listen to, I had never heard
of them. It caught my interest enough that I went..."whoa...who
are these guys?" |
| The
opposing opinion written by Bear: This
album just continued to make me wonder how Frediablo could have
come up with such interesting shit for Gorelord and the first
Wurdulak album. This did nothing but bore me, the riffs sucked,
and the drumming was extremely disappointing considering who
it is (Horgh ex-Immortal). This is easily the most overrated
non-major independent release this year. |

Anthrax |
We've
Come For You All |
Sanctuary |
 |
Supporting
the ruling:
Snake, Iron Maiden, Brack, Jewel Throne, Xena, Crimson |
| Opposed:
Dismembered Carcass, Stark, Rev, Metal Priestess, Bear |
| The
majority opinion written by Xena: Anthrax
has done fine without Belladonna and Turbin. Bush take's hold
of the torch and carries it with honor. This album proves it. |
The
opposing opinion written by Metal Priestess:. No
Belladonna, No Anthrax. End of story.
Added by Dismembered Carcass: An album
you can snap your fingers to while walking through a mall with
a headset on. Now that Kevorkian has been locked up I would
suggest that the 'boyz' from Anthrax make an appointment with
their nearest vet office. |
