I think 1976 was the year that the seeds of heavy metal, sown by bands like Sabbath, Budgie, Deep Purple ect. in the early 70s, really began to take root and develop. Judas Priest released what is arguably the first fully fledged heavy metal album in “The Sad Wings of Destiny” and Thin Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult, Kiss and Rainbow all released the heaviest and, in many people’s opinion, best albums of their respective careers. Add to this great albums by AC/DC, UFO, Budgie, Aerosmith, Lone Star, Rory Gallagher, The Scorpions, Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Uriah Heep and ZZ Top, plus the release of Y&T’s “Yesterday and Tomorrow”, possibly the heaviest album to come out of the States up to this time, and it all adds up to a vintage year for hard rock and the first genuine shoots of what was to blossom into heavy metal.

I really don't know why this one has got so few responses. So far it has been the best year, and for my point of view I think it will remain the best as long as we are in the 70s.

I don't get it either. I expected all the guys who are into punk and the newish sorts of hard rock and very early metal to chime in with their lists as well.

For me it is the last great year of a long streak of stellar years for music and we will have to many years forward before music reach the same standard again.
