Just as last year here's the opportunity to post about 2012 releases you've heard. Fire away...

Charon - Sulphur Seraph (The Archon Principle)
Enjoyable Black Metal from German band Charon (not to be confused with the Gothic Metallers from Finland). More melodic BM than traditional but not in any way overblown. Very good musicianship and competent vocals make this an above average BM album that should appeal to most Black Metal lovers. 6/10
Head Crusher - Let the Blood Run
Metalcore by numbers. Piss poor even by metalcore standards. One to avoid. 2/10 |

Horrendous - The Chills
A very good debut album from a comparatively new (formed in 2009) and very promising American band. This is old school Death Metal very much in the mold of late 80s Death but with a huge Pestilence style Thrash vibe and a distinct early Swedish Death Metal feel to the guitars. The vocals are delivered in a raw growl but remain crystal clear throughout and the production is almost flawless. Highly recommended to Death Metal and old school fans. 8/10

Inner Fear - First Born Fear
This is the first time I've heard anything by this particular band although, occording to Metal Archives, they were formed in the mid 90s and this is their 4th full length album. What we have is Symphonic Goth cum Power Metal, not unlike Nightwish or Within Temptation but with more emphasis on the Gothic side than those two bands. Musically the band are as darkly atmospheric as would be expected from a Goth band and the vocals are the same type of female/male combo that Nightwish use.
Unfortunately this album is badly let down by the lyrics which, much of the time, just don't make any sense. For example this verse is from a track called "Lustmistress":
In her mighty affection I'm drown Even shadows are afraid of her spawn She rules her selfishness at once Undressed to use my spirit Her rigid passion heals it I'm crumbing down when she's above
To me that is totally incomprehensible and it's not the worst example on the album by a long way. Inner Fear are from the Czech Republic but have chosen to sing the songs, on this album at least, in English rather than their native language. This, I believe, was a mistake as the lyrics appear to have lost a lot of their meaning and intent in translation. Personally I'd prefer to listen to an album with lyrics that I don't understand because they are in a language I don't understand rather than them being in a language I do understand but can't make sense of.
It's a shame because lyrics apart this is a good album and anybody who likes this style of music and dosen't mind nonsensical lyrics could do worse than check it out. 5/10

Nekromantheon - Rise, Vulcan Spectre
This is the best of the dozen or so 2012 releases I've heard to date. Extreme Thrash of high quality and welcome brevity. 8 tracks in just over 30 mins, averaging about 3.30 each, make this one short, sharp and very sweet. Only the fact that the songs sound very similar and lack a bit of variety stopped this album getting 9/10. However it comes highly recommended and gets a respectable 8/10.
Legions - Wasteland
Decidedly average Death Metal from the USA. Albums like this are probably released by the hundreds every month. It's a decent album that is enjoyable enough for a couple of plays, but there is nothing to startle or excite the listener and make them want to keep returning to the album. It's worth checking out but don't expect anything out of the ordinary. 5/10

Lamb Of God - Resolution (Groove Metal/Metalcore)
Recently I read somebody calling them the top contenter if it comes to be sort of an successor to Pantera. That's probably a bit too much but not that far off either. Lots of groove metal and some metalcore here and there. Heard it only once so far and there was no bad song it. Not ready for a final rating yet, but it will be somewhere in the range of 5 to 7 out of 10. |

I've been listening to this one myself recently and I'll post my opinion about it shortly. Having now heard a few times I basically agree with what you say and I'll be rating it about the same as you.

I have heard little this year, yet I have already heard 3 albums that will be serious final list contenders...
Swallow The Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird Desecravity - Implicit Obedience Beyond The Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit
I've really enjoyed "Horrendous - The Chills" as well.

Orange Goblin - Eulogy for the Damned Candlelight Records
Pretty much what I expected from Orange Goblin, a solid mix of Traditional/Doom & Stoner/Hard Rock. There are moments to thrash the fuck out, and times when you could just picture yourself at a biker bar knockin' back a few cold ones while there's awesome Blues solos coming from the band. Yeah, I have to say it has a tendency to drag in the middle, so it loses some points there. 7/10
Corrosion of Conformity - S/T Candlelight Records
So CoC decides to go Pepper-less for this album. Fuckin' sweet. Gone is the almost pure Southern Rock stylings of "In the Arms of God" and what we have one could call a great balance between CoC's old Crossover roots of the 80's and the more Southern tinged-NOLA Thrash style of the Pepper Keenan era. You can definitely still tell this is a NOLA album, loaded with plenty of sludgier interludes, but I can't say I've ever heard a Thrash album displaying these influences in such a manner. I'm not so sure it'll have major staying power, but I think its required early listening for 2012. 7-8/10 |

Iron Fire - Voyage of the Damned Better than their last one but not as good as their best. It's a little less straight forward and little darker, so it might appeal more to other people than me. Still some great songs here and there of course.

Abominable Putridity - The Anomalies of Artificial Origin Brutal Bands Brutal Death Metal
Basically when it comes to this style of music I have to admit that I find the vast majority of listenable material exactly that listenable. Every now and then a BDM album comes out and absolutely blows me away, Putridity and Benighted achieved that last year. This album is not in that class, it's just simply listenable. This album does have lots of tempo changes from ripping fast DM to some more crunchy sludge moments, a demonstration of strong command of instruments, and its only 25 minutes so it shouldn't seem like its dragging. I'll check out anything this band does, and I could easily see using them in a podcast, however, overall I will most likely turn to something else for my personal listening. 6/10 |

Aborted - Global Flatline
Sorta a return to form for this release. I hear a lot of the early days mixed in with some grove elements. Good sampling as well. Also I don't tend to lose interest on this record as I did with the past two full length releases. Hopefully it will stand the test of time and be a list worthy record but it's way too early to tell atm. A fair 7 out of 10 rating. |

Decaying - Encirclement
Similar to Hail of Bullets. They are a relatively new band from Finland, forming in 2010. They play DM with lyrical themes about war, death and politics(what more could you ask for). Not much else to say about this, just a decent listen with a few stand out tracks. 5 out of 10 |

Metal Detector (Ita) - Metal Demon Unsigned Traditional Metal
The album starts off decent with some Thrashy Traditional Metal on Vengeance Demon (a decent track with a few faults), slides into mediocrity with Soul of the Scorpion, comes raging back with Heavy from the Sky and then proceed to stack the rest of the album up to compile a heaping load of putrid shit. Don't even get me started on the use of classical melody as a solo in "West of Heaven," yeah, it can be done, but that is EXACTLY how not to do it. Probably should have passed this along to Ye Old Metal Curmudgeon. Two decent songs can't save this from being a fuckin' pile, just saves it from a 2 rating. 4/10 |

Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction
I've read nothing but fabulous reviews for this...like album of the year type reviews...but I've only been able to find two songs thus far here
http://soundcloud.com/brooklynvegan/sets/pallbearer-selections-from
but if the other 3 songs are as good or better than these, then it will instantly become my frontrunner for 2012. Seriously brilliant Doom. Comes out Feb. 21.

Well, their demo is fucking sick and its being released by Profound Lore Records both of which point towards greatness (though I wish they would have redone "Gloomy Sunday" for the full length). |

Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity
I was really caught off guard while listening to this record. This band has gotten better and better with each release. They added clean vocals which sounds great. Also the guitar work is furious and heavy. They have come a long way from their early days of Carcass worship and hopefully they can only improve and this album is a good step in the right direction. |

North - The Great Silence Call it what you like: Atmospheric stoner sludge of black pagan doom? I don't know, but I'm really enjoying it.
Dark Forest - Land of the Evening Star A black atmosphere of melodic pagan folk. Aparently this is a one-man act. And it's Canadian! Yeah, we're all a bunch of loners. Well worth the listen.
Essenz - Mundus Numen Er...Well, black doom pretty much covers it. I love this type of scream...like black death, so I'm pleased as punch and want to scream along. Good times, plenty of whammy. Recommundus.

Running Wild - Shadowmaker I've read some bad reviews of this, but I really don't agree. While Shadowmaker doesn't really prove why Rock n' Rolf and his heavy rock had to make a comeback it's actually a pleasent and well crafted album. The first song, Piece of the Action, is the best, but the quality doesn't dive too much over the span of the album - even if the tracks are very much alike. The hit is probably the rock n' roll anthem Me and the Boys, but it's not the best song. Shadowmaker is old fashioned and conservative, but Running Wild are by no means outstaying their welcome with this effort. |

Sabaton - Carolus Rex While this is not bad as such I find no charm in it. The melodies are ok here and there, but I find the singer's voice way too irritating. On this album as on some of their earlier ones, there are some hits hidden, but not Artero Dominatus I'm afraid. Live Sabaton is much better and more intense, here they are just a bit boring. Maybe I'm a bit harsh on them, but this album just doesn't light my spark. People who don't like the lighter power metal might like this, but it doesn't really make it any better. |

Soul Sacrifice - Carpe Mortem This Turkish band offers riff driven melodeath in the vein of 1990's Swedish scene, and they mix it a bit up with more modern melodic choruses. While it's not really bad it's simply very bland. I've heard the album once and I might be judging it too hard, but I don't feel like giving it another listen in the forseeable future. |
