Metal: A Headbanger's Journey

In order to mark the release of the movie Metal: A Headbanger's Journey on DVD, we have three copies of the DVD to give away.

We have replaced the (large) album image of 5 albums on the site with the cover of the DVD. The first 3 people to send the artist and title of all five albums to THEMike will win a copy of the DVD (Region 2, which is UK/Europe, but won't play in the US or elsewhere unless you have an unlocked DVD player).

Also we have a chance to put some questions to the creators of this movie, if you have a question you'd like to see answered, send the question to THEMike. A full snakenet review of the movie will follow soon, but here are the full details:

A Film By: Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen, Jessica Joy Wise

“ A magnificent documentary about the wonderful and frightening world of Heavy metal” Kerrang!

Put up the devil horns! Metal truly rules the world!

This summer Momentum Pictures will take you on an unforgettable musical ride with the retail and rental DVD release of the hit cinema documentary Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey on 7 August 2006. Featuring interviews and insights from the Pantheon of Metal Gods including Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Dee Snider, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, Lemmy and many, many more. Packaged in a special, limited edition, “Heavy Metal” case and featuring a raft of fantastic extras such as an exclusive podcast, making of featurette, outtakes, documentary on Norwegian Black Metal and extended interviews - for those about to rock, we salute you!

“A must-see documentary.” Nuts

Our host on this journey is 30-year-old Sam Dunn, a lifelong Metal fan and Anthropology scholar. After years of studying various global cultures Sam decided to turn his academic eye to the culture of Metal. His mission: to explore the musical roots of Metal from classical to jazz to blues, delve into the psyche of those who make it and those who love it, understand why it is demonised and marginalised and the never-ending controversy that surrounds it. On the way Sam answers some of the most enduring Heavy Metal puzzles: who invented the famed devil horns, what is the Devil’s note and why is it called Heavy Metal?

“Superbly crafted examination of heavy metal culture.” Zoo

Utilising both his scholarly technique and fan’s enthusiasm, Sam travels the world interviewing and meeting some of the biggest and most notorious names in Metal, exploring the numerous genres and sub-genres. At the Hammersmith Apollo Sam interviews Bruce Dickinson, in L.A he meets Dee Snider form Twisted Sister, travelling to Norway Sam meets Blasphemer and Necrobutcher from Black Metal group Mayhem and in Germany he’s joined by 30,000 other heavy metal fans at the Wacken festival, the Woodstock for Metallers.

“ …engrossing, horrifying and – yes – funny.” Total Film

Complementing the musician interviews Sam meets some of his fellow academics and industry insiders to further explain the Metal phenomenon; sociologist Deena Weinstein author of “Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture”; Gavin Baddeley Satanist and author of “Lucifer Rising: Sin, Devil Worship and Rock & Roll”; Pamela Des Barres world famous “super groupie” and Joey Severance, long-time metal tour manager. These are just a few of the places and people brought together in the most comprehensive and entertaining documentary on the phenomenon we know collectively as Heavy Metal.

Sam Dunn: What is the primary idea behind your music?
Gaah (Gorgorath): Satan

Lesson 1: Devil Horns: fold your middle, ring and thumb into your palm with the thumb holding down the two digits. Your index and pinkie will now be pointing straight into the air. Rock on.
Lesson 2: Devil Horns, Part 2, Both hands: all digits are brought to the palms excluding the pinkie; hands are brought together at the thumbs. Commonly known as “too much metal for one hand”

"I never questioned my sexuality at any point, and I was up there in lingerie."
-- Dee Snider of Twisted Sister
