This thread was inspired by Lord Slayer of Light's 25 Favourite Albums thread but with a fundamental difference. The idea is that, instead of posting a list of your favourite albums, you post a list of albums that you think other Snakenet members (and Metalheads in general) should have in their collection, or listen to at least once.

The figure 25 in the thread title is arbitrary as I only chose that particular number because I think this is a sort of companion to LSoL’s thread and wanted to keep things consistent., so you can include as many, or as few, albums on your own list as you like. The only restrictions on the albums you put in your list are: they should be metal (so no hard rock/prog rock/hardcore ect.) and you should have only 1 album per band (no posting a list of early Metallica albums). If you’re not sure if a particular band qualifies as metal the rule of thumb is to look for the band on Metal Archives, if it ain’t there it ain’t metal.

The albums you chose can be as obscure or as well known as you like, the only criteria is that they should be albums that you think other people need to hear but may have missed. What genre of metal you decide to cover is up to you. You can be eclectic and include album from every genre, or you can be more selective by including albums from 1 particular genre and posting a list of exclusively death metal albums for example. There’s no limit on the number of lists you can post eother, so if anybody wants to do individual lists for each genre of metal please feel free to do so.

The main idea behind this thread is to introduce people to albums that they may have missed, for whatever reason, but are worth searching out and listening to. To help people identify albums that they might like to investigate further it would be a good idea to include as much information about each album as possible. So as well as the band name and album title please try to give the band’s country of origin, the genre of metal they play and the year the album was released. See my own initial list for an idea of what I mean.

O.K. those are the ground rules so now it’s up to you boys and girls, get those lists in and lets see lots of albums you think other Snakenetters need to hear at least once in their life. BTW I’m fully expecting this thread to cost me a load of money because I’m pretty certain there will be a lot of albums here that I’m going to have to go out and buy. Sign of the devil dude!

To kick things off here’s my own list of “25 metal albums you must hear before you die”. A few explanations about what is and what is not included here first though. Firstly I’ve concentrated somewhat on a genre that tends to get a fair amount of ridicule here on Snakenet, power metal,
It’s no secret that, personally, I love the genre and I know that there are some great power metal albums that get overlooked simply because they are power metal. I’ve included quite a few power metal albums here that I think fall into that category although I’ve kept away from the gayer side of the genre (no Blind Guardian or Edguy). Actually I might post a fuller list of power metal albums that I think deserve to be more widely heard if I can find the time to compile one.

I’ve also kept clear of the really popular bands which is why there’s no Maiden, Metallica, Priest, ect. As I’m certain most SNMR members will at least have heard all their albums. However, it’s up to other people whether they want to include such bands in their lists. It’s your list put whatever you want on it.

O.K. enough waffle, here’s my list. Comments about it are welcome and will be responded to.

Looking at your list there's much for me to catch up with Wink

I like your pick for Accept's "Restless and Wild". That would be the one I'd recommend as well. The intro alone is kickass! And the final track "Princess Of The Dawn" always gives me goosebumps.

Does hard/heavy rock count as metal?

While it is not really metal, my list would not be complete without some Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple...

for me too.
But if you listen to every Led Zep albums, except one or two songs, everything is blues and rock.
Deep Purple was considered has hard rock band and I never understood why Led Zep was entitled Hard Rock band. Maybe because of "Whole Lotta Love" ?

You know, there were a bunch of heavy/hard rock back in time and they were precursor of metal.

That being said, it's up to you to include whatever band you consider as metal. we live in a free world Grin Winking Goatee

Apparently you go to hell to be punished, not to enjoy yourself, so no heavy metal I'm afraid. Eek

Off course it all depends on whose side of the story you believe but, personally, I don't believe either side because I'm a total atheist. If you don't believe god exists how can you believe the devil exists?. SHIT! We've just turned this thread into a theological discussion. Quick, move it to the Green Room. Grin

Sorry Metal_Dem but you can't die until you've posted at least one list in this thread. I, for one, will be very interested to see which albums you think other people must hear before they die. Sign of the devil dude!

I stated that I didn't want anybody to include hard/heavy rock in their lists because I want to concentrate on metal in this thread. There's nothing stopping you starting a similar thread for those early bands that laid the groundwork for metal (or for bands that still play those styles). I will definitely contribute to it if you do. Sign of the devil dude!

LOL

I started to do a list, but I scrapped it because I don't think there is very much that I've listened to that others on SnakeNet haven't. I mean...I started SN with the expressed purpose of bringing metal to the masses and while over the years I have introduced people to a lot of stuff they might not have heard otherwise, everything I was picking was pretty much played out here.

The best part of going to underground fests like the old Milwaukee Metalfests and Maryland Deathfest is they showcased so many unsigned and relatively unknown bands. That is pretty much what I tried to do with Metal Nation as well. I rarely watch headliners at shows like that.

Like for example, what I usually do at Maryland Deathfest is I'll ask someone like my buddy Brant or I Have Dysentary or even just random deathheads and find out who they really want to see. The people that can really uncover gems for ya are the ones that are fanatics about one sub-genre. I'm too all over the place in my tastes and too far removed from the underground these days to really have much of value to input. I might come up with something after MDF though. Smile

Does that mean you've posted a similar thread at some time Sorti? If you did I can't remember it. I thought somebody might have done something like this before so I did do a search before I started. Nothing came up though.

Loads of posts - hardly anyone recommended albums -
My time to shine...
So after I spent what was left of my busy afternoon using the brainlike sustance in my head to figure out what I would advice young and helpless children of metal to listen to (YES - I am being cynical) THIS is what came out in the end:

#1 Slayer - Reign in Blood
#2 Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
#3 Venom - Welcome to Hell
#4 Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
#5 Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
#6 Death - Leprosy
#7 W.A.S.P. - Still not black enough
#8 Metallica - Ride the Lightning
#9 Tank - Filth Hounds of Hades
#10 Exodus - Bonded by Blood
#11 Bloodbath - Breading Death EP
#12 Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider
#13 Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
#14 At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
#15 Paradise Lost - In Requiem
#16 Grave Digger - The Grave Digger
#17 Testament - The Gathering
#18 Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
#19 Kreator - Enemy of God
#20 Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
#21 In Flames - Come Clarity
#22 Anthrax - Among the Living
#23 U.D.O. - Mean Machine
#24 Blood Feast - Chopping Block Blues
#25 Therion - Symphony Masses (Ho Drakon Ho Megas)

The part with only one record per band was the biggest difficulty for me so here goes an additional piece of advice:

Slayer - South of Heaven
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Judas Priest - British Steel
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery
Kreator - Endless Pain
Kreator - Violent Revolution

I was recently in a debate with someone about Bonnaroo and the main complaint was that there were no good headliners. I said, "I can't remember the last time I went to a 'fest because of the headliners." Headliners are just a draw for the idiot mass. I'm not saying you are a member of the idiot mass if you dig a headliner, are looking forward to seeing a headliner or just going to the show because of a headliner, but the point of the headliner is to draw the biggest audience. Its meant to grab more casual fans attention. The gold is always in the support.
