Seattle thrash/progressive metal band Nevermore will release their 7th album "The Obsidian Conspiracy" May 31st in Europe and June 8th in North America via Century Media Records. The drum tracks for "The Obsidian Conspiracy" were completed in the group's hometown of Seattle with Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers, who previously worked with vocalist Warrel Dane's solo debut, "Praises to the War Machine". Longtime friend and collaborator Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Exodus, Machine Head) once again handled mixing duties.

Album artwork:

Finalized tracklisting:
01. The Termination Proclamation
02. Your Poison Throne
03. Moonrise (Through Mirrors Of Death)
04. And The Maiden Spoke
05. Emptiness Unobstructed
06. The Blue Marble And The New Soul
07. Without Morals
08. The Day You Built The Wall
09. She Comes In Colors
10. The Obsidian Conspiracy

UPDATE 5/14
Listen to "Without Morals" on Nevermore's Myspace page.

Covers for "The Crystal Ship" (The Doors) and "Transmission" (The Tea Party) where also recorded.

According to Dane, the song "And The Maiden Spoke" "is going to blow your minds; it's twisted, progressive lunatic fringe riffing with vicious hooklines."

He added: "These songs are full of newfound rage, lyrically and musically. Jeff Loomis has come up with some amazing new riffs that will no doubt please old and new fans alike. Also, I think the combination of Peter and Andy will result in something very, very special."

Maybe it`s the promotion, they`re one of the biggest names in the metal world. And we all know the biggest doesn`t mean the best. Musically speaking they`re good, just not that good as people make them out to be. Almost every metalhead I know is like: "Nevermore ? Wow, they`re like the second coming of Iron Maiden !" and shit. Same problem as with Opeth, Nightwish and a few others - good bands, but nothing to write home about.

To this I can only say that the very term "overrated" is overused, if not indeed overrated.

If you're basing this statement on the response of Nevermore fans, then your sample is biased. If you are talking about "official" sources like magazines and interviewers, etc. then the simple response is "who cares what they think?"

Speaking for myself, as a big Nevermore fan, I have found their music to be a very unique and compelling one that has found a niche that is not filled by other bands. They are not the second-coming of Iron Maiden... Iron Maiden are the second coming of Iron Maiden.
The are not the best band. No band is the best band since we have new music being made as we speak. But Nevermore are good, really good at what they do.

Sorry but that title is already claimed by Meshuggah hands down.

Back to Nevermore, I disagree with you that their success may have anything to do promotion. I've been a big fan of theirs since PoE (1996) and you can take my word for it they had very limited success back then. Then, they pulled out DNB which got them raving reviews in a lot of metal mags. (It was album of the month in quite a few of them), and still it's only with DHiADW they reached a decent level of recognition.

Why do I like them? Warrel Dane is an amazing singer and lyricist. Jeff Loomis is a Guitar God in his own right. They know how to write memorable songs. They've evolved without stabbing their fanbase in the back. Their heavy/thrash with some prog in the mix sounds like nothing else... So the question is more, what's wrong with YOU for not liking them? Tongue

I`ve never said I don`t like `em. I really do. By saying overrated I mean they`re considered better than they really are, not that they suck.

As for Meshuggah I gotta disagree, they`re not that popular/liked among metalheads. At least not among the ones i know Wink

I must have had my head in a toaster oven for a few years. Is Nevermore really one of the biggest names in metal because nobody around me talks about them.

I respect the fact that Nevermore is willing to make heavier music even though most fans would be happy to have an album full of mid paced music with ballads in between. I feel that they are a solid band despite all of the criticism they receive. I also don't believe that they are one of the most popular metal bands around.

Nevermore made quite an impact in the metal scene with their early albums. That might have earned them the "biggest band" label. But after "Dead Heart ... " their songwriting faded, made the following albums sound more mediocre (At least to me). And their status faded too...

Yet, I feel curious about the new album. I always do.
