Now all this polls of best ***-song etc. have made me think a lot. One thing I asked myself is "If people asked my what my favourite music is - I say metal to keep it general. But what if someone asked me what my favourite albums are? How would I reply?"...

In that process I noticed that my answer would have been very different 2 years ago. So I thought - why not make a thread of it?

So fire away Ladies and Gentlemen: What are your 25 favourite metal albums, those you are listening to weekly, daily...?

Well, I had a list of Top 50 I did 4 or 5 years ago on my MySpace profile, but I seem to have deleted it at some point. I was going to just post that, but, alas, it's gone. I like the topic, although it's hard to compare some albums, I do have a soft spot for top 3, top 10 or top 25 lists. I'll work out a list tonight and post it later.

I can only second that. Will see what I can do, but such a list will most likely change quite often depending on the mood and stuff.

Like I said before, I've done a top 50 before, so I have an idea what the top 5-10 will look like, but things depend on mood and such. Anyway, I got 45 albums (was 44 until i saw one on your list that I added) that I'll start filing down and ranking after the hockey game tonight.

Alright, I finished. The disclaimers: First, this is based on my mood tonight, shuffling between these, adding other albums, subtracting some, etc will happen when asked from one day to the next. Second, I do not count compilations or live albums. Third, when an album has bonus tracks, I ignore them, I'm only looking at the original album. Last, this is strictly metal, it's hard enough comparing differing sub-genres of metal, trying to throw in something like Pink Floyd would be impossible. So, here we go, my top 25 today.

1 Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
2 Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
3 Enslaved - Monumension
4 Borknagar - The Archaic Course
5 Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
6 Ulver - Bergtatt
7 Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising
8 Enslaved - Maurdraum
9 Immolation - Close to a World Below
10 Opeth - Still Life
11 Vintersorg - Cosmic Genesis
12 COC - Deliverance
13 Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
14 Anathema - Judgement
15 Kamelot - Karma
16 Opeth - Blackwater Park
17 Black Label Society - Sonic Brew
18 Agalloch - The Mantle
19 Primordial - Spirit the Earth Aflame
20 Megadeth - Youthanasia
21 Death - Symbolic
22 Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
23 Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
24 Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
25 Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill

So now it pays off to have prepared a similar list at last.fm a few months ago Wink
For me the event that made me want to compile my own list of alltime favs was the regular "featured reader" in the Rock Hard magazine. They always have a top 20 up which usually is not what I prefer. When some guy had a list which contained several cool albums I liked myself I wondered what I would list if I was the featured reader.

As their lists are not ranked, mine isn't ranked (yet) as well. Please forgive me if I don't stick to the requested format Wink

Yes, exactly. Because they are not ranked, there was no easy way to cut off after 25 entries. So yeah, I neglected the requested format in two ways.

Maybe I find time to do the ranking to come up with a proper top 25 for this thread.

That's why i didn't put too much thought into mine. I'm sure there's things missing, but I just wanted to get a quick 25 out before I began to overthink it. Of course the list won't be 100% accurate, but it's just fun to do. Certainly more fun than pointing out the obvious and saying it's impossible to make up a top 25 list.

I thought about invoking that clause myself, but I just couldn't snub Blackwater Park, Spirit the Earth Aflame and Maurdraum. Those three albums are just way too good.

In my original list of 45 I had, there were two albums by those three bands plus two each from Megadeth, Green Carnation, Celtic Frost (although neither made it to the top 25) and Ozzy. I imagine if I did a top 100, all those would appear twice plus Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Destroyer 666 and Enslaved would appear three, maybe four times.

Top 100 might take a bit too long but you could eventually expand the idea to say Top 50 all time fav albums? Of course that might include non metal too but it depends on what you have in your collection. Top 25 is possible but like I said, it would be the "at the moment" favs with only a few remaining in rank from week to week Wink

Still here is the "at the moment" Top 25 Metal Albums(In no particular order):-

Cantata Sangui: On Rituals And Correpondence In Constructed Realities,
Arcturus: Sideshow Symphonies,
Amorphis: Far From The Sun,
Ayreon: Ayreonants Only
Cynic: Traced In Air
Sigh: Hangman's Hymn
Chthonic: Mirror Of Retribution
Flowing Tears: Jade
Funeral: As The Light Does The Shadow
Gnaw Their Tongues(Hol): All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity
Green Carnation: Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
Madder Mortem: Deadlands
Moonspell: Night Eternal(Limited Edition)
October Falls: The Womb Of Primordial Nature
Opeth: Watershed
Threshold: Critical Mass
Pain Of Salvation: One Hour By The Concrete Lake
Dream Theater: Images And Words
Iron Maiden: Powerslave
Megadeth: Rust In Peace
Metallica: The Black Album
Judas Priest: Painkiller
Lacuna Coil: Unleashed Memories
Sinergy: To Hell And Back
Black Sabbath: Cross Purposes Sign of the devil dude!

And no mine aren't ranked either because I find that generally hard to do anyway. Have fun! Tongue

As others have already suggested, not an easy task.

As a rule the albums on my list have had to stand the test of time, so you won't find to many recent releases. It is not a fixed list, and next week if asked again no doubt would be different.

I've limited it to one album, one band (no live or best of albums). My only other criteria being that when I press play the music instantly induces that wonderful primal urge to bang your head, all the time, every time. Sign of the devil dude!

In no other order than alphabetically.

Accept - Balls to the Wall
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease
Arsis - We are the Nightmare
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
Callenish Circle - My Passion//Your Pain
Catamenia - VIII-The Time Unchained
Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising
Dew-Scented - Inwards
Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
Flotsam and Jetsom - Doomsday for the Deceiver
God Dethroned - The Lair of the White Worm
Judas Priest - Point of Entry
Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Krokus - Headhunter
MasseMord - Let the World Burn
Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise
Nightrage - Sweet Vengeance
Occult - Elegy for the Week
Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy
Sacred Reich - Ignorance
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow...When I Can't even Smile Today
The Crown - Deathrace King
The Mandrake - The Burning Horizon at the End of Dawn
Warriour Soul - Salutations From the Ghetto Nation

My first ten alternates right now would be

AC/DC - Powerage
Amon Amarth - VS the World
Carcass - Descanting the Insalubrious
Death - Symbolic
Dio - The Last in Line
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Sabbat - Dreamweaver
Saxon - Wheels of Steel
Sodom - Agent Orange
Testament - The Legacy

I did that too. I usually find it not too hard to decide on which album I like best for a given band. Comparing that to the best album of all the other bands is a manageable task. Now, if I opened it up to more than one album per band, somehow that makes it more difficult to me. Plus the fact that this means to leave out some bands completely.
