Ooh, I get to nip this one in the bud before it derails the thread this time!

xxxian Devil = Christian Devil. x's are often used shorthand for Christ, as in X-mas. Wink

(We seek to educate.)

Anyways, to contribute to the discussion, Bear and Snake are right on the head with their Supporting Acts Bring the Most to the Table at Metalfests comments. You want to find the obscure bands that kick the most ass, well at least if you have an interest in finding new, awesome music (which I've already stated in other threads that most of us are). At Milwaukee Metalfest, I've actually fallen asleep during headliners and not been disappointed. At other fests, there have been headliners that I've been geeked to see that have left me disappointed.

As for a list, I could conceivably compile one, but most of the stuff I'd put down I've gotten as suggestions through the New Albums (cheap plug) forum anyways. I love the Omen name drop in axe's list though; I need to pick their shit up. I'll also throw out the names of Pharaoh - The Longest Night which is awesome, as I listened to it today (featuring Tim Aymar who sang with Control Denied/Death), and Division's Trinity (who were featured at Metal Nation 1) which is still one of the absolute best albums I own.

Yeah, I was gonna make a joke about it, but that would have given what it meant away, and I figured I'd let you dangle.

I'll write up some sort of list tonight. I imagine there will be a lot of crossover between my favorite 25 and this, but what the hell, I'll give it a go.

You're into Morbid Saint? That's awesome. They are from the town I currently live in. I met the singer at a bar one night and went to an after party at his place where about half a dozen of us hung out drinking whiskey and Coke and we watched a George Carlin special. He also gave me a copy of this album re-released with their unreleased second album Destruction System. Good stuff indeed!

Yeah, I only have it as a download but damn does that album kick ass! At some times it even beats "Spectrum Of Death"! Really bad ass stuff, it's a shame they didn't get to record more albums.

Only 4 lists so far but they are all awesome, thanks guys. I found 6 albums on there that I need to search out for my own collection. I'm currently working on a list of less well known power metal albums that I think deserve more attention. I'll try to get it posted before the weekend.

@DDD, where did you get the Devil's Whorehouse - "Werewolf" demo from, I need that one. Sign of the devil dude!

@Joris, which Griffin is that on your list. I've got all the albums by the band from Norway but "Flight of the Griffin" ain't one of them. Great that you concentrated on one particular genre of metal and a great collection of albums for anyone who wants to explore that style more. Sign of the devil dude!

Keep those lists coming people and let's have more like Joris's which are dedicated to one genre. And to those guys who have already posted lists, there is nothing stopping you posting more if you can make the time to compile them. Grin

I have to admit, I'm too lazy to assemble yet another list. I could copy my 25 alltime favs minus the ones that are not metal enough. But that's somewhat lame. I think the threads are too similar.

For me I think they would definitely be two different lists. My tastes are very niche (though contrary to popular belief very broad), so this would end up being more like my comments on bands that play my club. I have a personal and a professional opinion Winking Goatee.

I was going to go through and make a detailed list, but I think that would be too much like the top 25. So I'm going to just shoot from the hip this time. I'm leaving out the obvious on this list, like Number of the Beast, Holy Diver, Master of Puppets, British Steel, Rust in Peace, etc because, well, duh.

Well, I made an initial list, and trimmed it down to 30, and I'm not going any further. Plus as a bonus I added 10 non-metal (mostly to trim the metal down, I removed hard rock like COC, Acid Bath and BLS)

Anyway, broken down by parent genre:

Black Metal
Absu - Tara
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Borknagar - The Archaic Course
Burzum - Filosofem
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Enslaved - Maurdraum
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Vintersorg - Cosmic Genesis

Death Metal
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Deceased - The Blueprints for Madness
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
Immolation - Close to a World Below
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Nocturnus - The Key
Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Zyklon - World ov Worms

Doom
Agalloch - The Mantle
Anathema - Judgement
Bethlehem - Dark Metal

Power Metal
Kamelot - Karma

Thrash
At The Gates - With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Sodom - Persecution Mania
Toxic Holocaust - Hell on Earth

Non-Metal/Other
Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
Black Label Society - Sonic Brew
Corrosion of Conformtiy - Deliverance
Down - Nola
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Primus - Sailing on the Seas of Cheese
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Tool - Lateralus

Wow out of your ten non-metal bands I would have no problems calling six and maybe even seven of them "metal" of some sort. And a band like Dream Theater, I can not find anything what so ever to called other than metal.

I reviwed it, so I got it by mail... For free Tongue

I think it's available on amazon. It contains one track - Pentagram Murderer - that isn't anywhere else. IMO it's the best track they've made so far!

Like I said, I called them "non-metal" so my metal list would only be 30. 4 of those are in my metal section on my CD rack. Winking Goatee Dream Theater I would say is prog rock. Not quite power metal, although some of their stuff comes close (like Train of Thought). Them and Marillion are in my power/prog section and the Tool, SRV, Floyd and Primus are in my non-metal.

Word. Of those four bands I've really only heard enough to judge from two, Dream Theater and Type O. Type O is good, but just not my style, and I am a huge DT fan. (I can't fucking type today, there were about half a dozen errors I had to correct in there.)

No problem with Dream Theater on a metal list, they are a Progressive Metal band in my view. Tool would also qualify as they are also as much metal as progressive. The same applies to any other band in a similar vein.

Again, like I said, I called them non-metal so that my metal list would only be 30 albums. I don't think this thread should turn into a debate on genres or sub genres or sub sub sub sub genres. I've been in way too many of those to be interested in starting another pointless one.

I agree about the genre debate, we have enough of them on Snakenet as it is and I didn't start this thread fro that. That last post was meant more as a guide for anyone else thinking of contributing who might be unsure about certain bands.

I completely forgot None So Vile by Cryptopsy. Absolutely essential death metal. I forgot about it in my top 25 albums too. Momentary Lapse of Reason I guess. It should be high on both lists.
