@Joris, which Griffin is that on your list. I've got all the albums by the band from Norway but "Flight of the Griffin" ain't one of them. Great that you concentrated on one particular genre of metal and a great collection of albums for anyone who wants to explore that style more. Sign of the devil dude!

It's the American 'Griffin' who released their debut "Flight Of The Griffin" in '84 and their second album "Protectors OF The Lair" in '86 ... both very recomendable power/speed metal albums.
They are plaing live at Keep It True XIV in Germany in April 2011! I never thought it would happen and I can't fucking wait to see them! Sign of the devil dude!

Edit: I just bought the new 'DarkThrone' and "Protectors Of The Lair" is mentioned in Fenriz's Guide To Must-Have Albums Wink

OK, since 25 albums are in no way representative of what I think is a must I have compiled 25 VERY old school albums I can recommend to everybody since I am a nerd and think it is important to know the roots of metal. Don't worry, it is not filled with hard rock, no AC/DC or Deep Purple but a lot of very old metal. Cool stuff Sign of the devil dude!

Accept - I'm a Rebel
Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Anvil - Metal on Metal
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend
Cirith Ungol - Frost and Fire
Def Leppard - On Through the Night
Demon - Night of the Demon
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Girlschool - Hit and Run
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Motörhead - Overkill
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Praying Mantis - Time Tells No Lies
Rainbow - Rising
Raven - Rock Until You Drop
Riot - Fire Down Under
Samson - Shock Tactics
Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law
Scorpions - Lovedrive
Tygers of Pan Tang - Wild Cat
Venom - Welcome to Hell
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
Witchfynde - Give 'Em Hell

Good one Sorti. Nothing wrong with those bands, I don't think of them are out of place in this thread. Great to see Girlschool and a lot of other NWOBHM bands on there. I was thinking of doing a NWOBHM list myself, if I can find time. Sign of the devil dude!

Yes it is. The "best of sub-genre" polls are clutter enough.

That's why I suggested people might like to do a list dedicated to one particular metal genre. Actually I'd like to see everybody who's contributed (or is going to contribute) to this thread do something like that. There's been a lot of diversity in the lists posted so far and it would be interesting to see how different specific genre lists would be. However I do realise that doing these things takes time and a lot of people just don't have the time to spare. So I'll just continue to post my own lists and see how things go.

And, to that end, here is my list of 25 1980's (well 1985 to 1989 anyway) power metal albums you must hear before you die. NWOBHM coming soon. Sign of the devil dude!

1. Attack (Germany) - Destines of War 1989
2. Attacker (USA) - The Second Coming 1988
3. Attika (USA) - Attika 1988
4. Deadly Blessing (USA) - Ascend From The Cauldron 1988
5. Exodo (Spain) - The New Babylon 1988
6. Gehenna (Mexico) - En busca del valle de Gehenna 1987
7. Heir Apparent (USA) - Graceful Inheritance 1986
8. Hittman (USA) - Hittman 1986
9. Iron Cross (USA) - Church and State 1987
10. Liar (Germany) - Nothing but the Truth 1989
11. Lion's Breed Germany) - Damn the Night 1985
12. Mania - Changing Times 1989
13. Mirrors Edge (USA) - No Laughing Matter 1989
14. Muro (Spain) - Mutant Hunter 1989
15. Obsession (USA) - Scarred for Life 1986
16. Phantom (USA) - Dead or Alive 1987
17. Ramses (Mexico) - Apocalipsis 1985
18. Scanner (Germany) - Hypertrace 1988
19. Sheilan (Spain) - Sheilan 1989
20. STS 8 Mission (Germany) - The Mystery of Time 1989

Post as many lists as you want. This thread isn't about best albums of... or favourite albums of... It's about suggesting albums that you think are worth listening to, but others might have missed for some reason. So go for it. Sign of the devil dude!

Let me know exactly which albums you're interested in Sorti and I'll get you more details. However I think if you know and like some of the bands on there you'll probably like all the rest. A word of warning though, some of them are hard to get hold of and very expensive if you want to buy them. Downloading them is probably your best option.

That's a very good selection from Joris and, with the addition of 'Hittman' and 'Viper', those are probably the most essential ones. Of the others 'Attack', 'Deadly Blessing', 'Mania', 'Sheilan' (who sing in Spanish), 'STS 8 Mission', 'Vaval' and 'Villain' are also highly recommended. All the others are definitely worth a listen at least. The only one to be a bit wary of is the 'Tyrus' - "Masters of Revenge" album because on copy that own, which is on cassette tape, the sound quality is very, very poor. Audiophiles should avoid this one.

Thanks both of you, it was nice of you to narrow the list down a bit. I was surprised that there was so many bands I did not know, but I guess that I have put too much effort in listening to rare 70's stuff rather than rare 80's stuff during my time Smile

To be more precise, 'Heir Apparent', 'Attacker', 'Scanner' and 'Viper' I know already (I do not pretend to have all their stuff) but 'Obsession' 'Titan Force' and 'Hittman' are totally new for me and I will check them out as soon as possible. Thanks again. Good thread this.

It's an acquired taste. I think the problem is a lot of ppl dont have the patience for some of the really long prog songs so they cant appreciate it. It was like when I first heard black metal, I couldn't work out what I was listening to, so I thought it was just racket, but now I can pick out almost all the instruments. I trained myself to know *HOW* to listen. Every genre seems to need a different approach. And now I can even comply a black metal list which I am still working on Sign of the devil dude!

Confused Really?
Power Metal is often mentionned as being gay. I never read here on SNMR that progressive metal is gay.
Progressive Metal is far from being gay though.

Well I have heard it called gay both here and outside the station. Not that I care really, because it is, as you say, far from being gay and some really awarding music to listen to.
