As regular users will have been noticing for months and months, our servers are overloaded. The forums are very slow. We had to do something. So we did.
We've upgraded the Forum software to the latest version which has a whole load of optimisations to make it 'faster'. We've improved the performance of a whole bunch of stuff.
And we've backed up all the old posts, and emptied the forums for a new beginning for 2004. All grudges and flame wars forgotten. We're back to the dawn of a new age.
Hopefuly, this will mean the forums (and site!) are faster for a good while to come.
We're sorry, but it's a small price to pay for a longer life for the site. |

We were trying to get it out as fast as possible. Every spare second has been spent hammering the code to get it ready. It's all happened in under 24 hours. Once the code was ready we want it live ASAP, which meant that by the time I'd got a warning message out, we'd have been half way through the change over, and no-one would have read it anyway. No one ever reads my tech topics. Then they all ask the questions I've already answered.

So the link to Active Topics on the top right of every page wasn't enough for you then?  Oh and then there is the fact that the menu still has the link (Metal Lounge->Forums->Active)

I noticed that now only 15 posts fill a page. Was that a deliberate decision (I liked 25 a lot better)? Do we still stop long threads at 10 pages?
And the icons and the post date ontop of each post makes a thread a lot less readable. |

I hadn't realised we'd changed from the default settings.
I've upped the limit (makes no fucking difference with MS Databases not having a LIMIT or @rowcount way of returning part of a query result  )
I prefer the icon/postdate being where it is personaly, but it's just a case of not important enough for me to have done yet. |

It's kinda lame that all of the posts are gone but oh well. The problem that I have is that on all of the pages, the small jpg's that are under peoples names (Usually the Support SN ones) aren't coming up on my PC and they are just X's in the boxes. Why is this?

If there are threads from the old forum that people think are important enough to bring onto the new board from the old one, please contact the moderator of the forum and discuss it with them. It is possible for me to bring stuff over, BUT PLEASE...talk to the mod of the forum about it. I don't have time to discuss this with everyone individually. |

this new forum rocks!! i like the 'view page since' having more options like the 6 and 12 hours instead of jumping from 2 hours to yesterday. i dont mind so much the time/date display or icons, it just takes some getting used to imo.
although i miss some of the old threads, i think its great that we can start fresh with the new year. there was so much lame crap slowing the boards down, it was good to get rid of the baggage. too bad though we still have some lame members who will continue posting retarded crap, oh well.
for the quick reply, i love that we can preview our post now. the forums really are super fast now, but i wonder if thats because of the optimization features or because there is hardly any content to weigh it down. in any case, mike you kick new levels of ass. but dont ask me for boobie pics.  |

Mike feels that the bog down was directly correlated to how many posts we had in the forum. In the past, I have no seen any increase in performance by archiving posts or completely deleting old ones. It could be that I just didn't delete enough of them. We'll see what happens now. No one likes to have an archival history of SnakeNet more then I do. I hate that we don't have access to everything, but it is far more important for people to be able to use the forum today, then look at what was posted yesterday, right?
Perhaps some day we will be fortunate enough to be able to afford the hardware to meet our needs, but until then, we have to suffer with what we have and make the best use of those limited resources.
