Indeed indeed. They also do label their music as 'blackmetal with-a-twist' to quote them. I find it very refreshening amidst all the depressive suicidal stuff.

I hope not.. It wouldn't be too fun anymore, if suddenly a whole bunch of new bands started playing that same style.

That would be hilarious, after "religious black metal" the next fashion would be "happy black metal". I'd laugh my ass off LOL. Actually I wouldn't even be surprised. Black metal was always a bit ridicoulus...

If someone tried to seriously pawn that off to me as a subgenre there is a very good chance I would reflexively kick them in the groin area.

Aye, so that such stupid people wouldn't reproduce. I'd call my friends so we could thank him with some long and heavy objects.

Just yesterday I've discovered a female fronted folk metal band from Russia called 'Kalevala'. Their debut is now residing in my top 20 and won't fall out Sign of the devil dude!

If, on the other hand, you do, you might do worse than checking out the Dutch band 'Irrwisch':

http://www.irrwisch.nl/Audiosamples.html

Also fun, Swedish band 'Enforcer' get the blood pumping with some high energy speed/heavy metal:

http://www.myspace.com/enforcerswe

Interesting tech/prog death metal band from Russia who, for some reason, have seen fit to name themselves after semi-famous Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch:

http://www.myspace.com/hieronymusboschrussia

And while we're at it, have some solid seeming (I've only checked their MySpace myself, but the new album is waiting for me) death/thrash from Japan, with 'Bassaium':

Wall of Sleep, a stoner band from hungary. Their new album was one of the best of the genre I heard in ages.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBOHbMbISfE

If you like the song, you won't be disappointed by the album

Sad Legend(Korea)

They play a melodic black metal in the vein of say Dark Fortress or Somberlain-era Dissection. Good shit, check out the self titled album from 1998.

I checked them out. Very nice band, good melodies, clean vocals that don't sound gay. If the only got rid of that keyboard... Worth checking

'Damaar', death/black from Lebanon. Sadly they only ever recorded 1 demo, but it is a vicious little kick in the teeth that fans of 'Blasphemy', 'Beherit' and their ilk ought to snap up. Rereleased on LP and CD by Nuclear War Now! Productions (cheap as fuck distro, check it out), btw.

http://www.myspace.com/damaarholocaust

EDIT:

Two of the guys were in the equally defunct 'Nightchains', which was more speed/thrash/heavy oriented. They recorded 1 full-length, and weren't too bad neither.

One more:

'Midnight' (US): raucous punky and blackened speed metal with nice bluesy guitar solos, holding some kind of middle ground between 'Motörhead' and old 'Venom'. Needless to say, this kicks all manner of arse.

Although not metal, I took a stab at a few Tangerine Dream CD's. Always heard snippets, but never committed to buy an album. Very good relaxing music. I look at it as a painting set to various sounds and beats.

Got their album "anatomy of life" a few months ago. Really good mix of heavy/goth/death. Need to check out the rest of their discography.

'Sleeping Village'. Black/doom with some ambient touches from Italy. Besides the one MySpace track I've only heard their "Mourning Persists" demo (at almost 45 minutes it's really a full-length), but it is really excellent. By all means go and d/l (you will have to, release was ltd to 500 CDrs).

uriah heep-wake the sleeper
a 2008 release and a damn good one. a nice surprise from these old geezers who i havent heard anything new from since the early eighties. its a nice blend of 70's psychadellia/proto heavy metal/classic rock.
highly recommended to all fans of the early stuff(old urah heep/deep purple/etc).
