A few things that blew my mind in recent days:

Arkona ... Slavic pagan metal Sign of the devil dude! at its best!
Obscura - Cosmogenesis ... interestingly enough came across it as an ad on facebook and loved it
Quo Vadis ... one of the best melodic death metal bands I have ever heard, I kick myself for not having known about these guys sooner

I've recently been listening to alot of strangre, trippy stuff.
So, I give you...
I Have Eaten The City
http://www.myspace.com/ihaveeatenthecity
Feral Geography is an exceptionally cool album, check it out.

Kayo Dot
http://www.myspace.com/kayodot
A little more conventional than "I Have Eaten The City", still With ambient progressive chapters. I'd recomend for fans of King Crimson or Isis.

That's about it from me.

Quo Vadis is great from what I remember, thanks for reminding me about them actually, I had completely forgotten about their existence.

I recently discovered PiLLCRUSHER.
Sludge/Doom/Down-Tempo from Texas.
They only have one EP out but I'm really digging it,

*Devian, death/thrash/black from Sweden.

Both their albums are great, I'm really fucking impressed.

http://www.myspace.com/truedevian

*Demiricous, thrash/death from Indiana.
Also really fucking good.

http://www.myspace.com/demiricous

They're more well-known than Devian, I'd assume, seeing as they're in the Metal Bible and Devian is not. How does one go about adding a band?

Here is something I just came across that may warrant further investigation:

Amogh Symphony (India)

Amogh Symphony is an Instrumental technical/progressive death metal band formed by Solo musician Vishal Jit Singh. The music is basically a type of combination of progressive metal and Indian classical fusing with the extreme brutality of technical death metal with respect to the groove of jazz and neo classical symphonic structures.

Sounds quite interesting...
Their 2009 debut full-length can be previewed on their Myspace page. Haven't really been able to find anything else on them so far.

Gotta say, one of my most interesting recent discoveries is the black metal band Odious from Alexandria, Egypt. They play really cool eastern-influenced music with keyboards naturally. These musicians were apparently trained as traditional middle eastern musicians before moving on to black metal...at least that's the impression that I get from the music. The production quality isn't that great and they use programmed drums...but if you can get past the production, it's really awesome. Also a lot of old Emperor influence mixed in with their sound.

hope you all enjoy it as much as I do

Maybe a little after the fact, but at Maryland Death Fest I picked up a ton of CDs. Some of bands I heard of, others of bands I had no idea about. There were two "middle ground" bands in there I picked up that blew me away. I had heard the name, but was unfamiliar with the music, and had only a vague idea what I was in for.

The first was Arkhon Infaustus. I got Orthodoxyn. Easily the disc I was most impressed with after giving em all a first listen.

The second was the one I most wanted to hear as I drove home from the airport (it's about an hour to hour and 15 minute drive). This was Paganizer. I got a two disc set with two full-lengths and two EPs (for $5 from Ibex Moon, what a fucking steal!) Anyway, the first one, Deadbanger lived up to all the expectations I had, and then some.

I can't speak for Arkhon Infaustus past the one album, but it's certianly worth picking up. And Paganizer, well, Deadbanger was the best, but all three were good.

I reccommend these two bands, highly.

'Altoriu Šešéliai' (aka 'Altar Shadows')

One-man ambient/folk/atmospheric black metal project from Lithuania. 2007's debut album "Margi Sakalai" is at times just gorgeous. A wonderful musical homage to the beauty of nature. The atmosphere on there is almost palpable.
Throw together some 'Drudkh', 'Wolves In The Throne Room', 'Kroda' and 'Empyrium', and you might start getting an idea of the sound. Though plenty of personality here, no 13-to-a-dozen crap.
Mastermind Avinpapis shows himself to be quite a talented songwriter. This album is one of those gems that often get lost because the band doesn't hail from one of the more "popular" regions, but if you want some dreamy, atmospheric music, you can't go wrong with 'Altar Shadows'. Recommended.

EDIT: had to fuck with the original band name spelling to make it readable on these boards

Omega Centauri

Two-piece band from Belgium/UK. They've only got one track up on their Myspace, but apparently a full-length is in the works. In any case, the available track shows some promise. Atmospheric black metal that is roughly somewhere in the same ballpark as 'Darkspace' in terms of musical concept. Worth keeping an eye out for, I reckon.

Remmirath

Originally known as 'Helcaraxe' (Svk) till they changed the name in 2005, on their 2008 debut full-length "Polis Rouge" this Slovakian band pulls off a nice bit of experimentation. Using black metal as the blueprint, other influences run the gamut from alternative, depressive, atmospheric and hard rock, over electronica, through jazz and some other less obvious ones. Fans of fusion and ecclecticism oughta check this out. Pretty good shizzle that holds real promise for things to come from this band.

I've been a big fan of a few CONCEPTION songs, but when I heard the title track to their album "Parallel Minds" I was blown away. It just came on the station. It's already one of my favorites. Great stuff if you like progressive metal. The singer is Roy Khan, who later went to Kamelot. Great stuff.

I have their "Flow" album and like it a lot. One of the few non-death/thrash albums I like Wink

Belenos - Errances Oniriques

This is a 2009 total re-recording of the 2001 release by the one-man pagan-themed black metal band Belenos. I have not heard any of his other albums, but I assure you I am going to try and find them all because this is simply one of the best BM albums I've ever heard. Check samples at

A friend I recently met at uni is into alot of interesting music, so we've been sharing. Sign of the devil dude!
Here are some of the jewels he's introduced me to.

Weakling
http://www.myspace.com/weakling66
Some pretty awesome material here. Dead as Dreams is one of the most potent black metal albums I've heard in a while, absolutely fantastic. The only album they have released so far I think, and their current status is unknown to me. I would be most depressed if I were to find that they have no intention of releasing any more material, but what they have made is something quite special even by itself.

L'acephale
http://www.myspace.com/lacephale
Pretty sexy ambient black metal. I've only heard the "Book of lies" album all the way through, but I must get my hands on more very soon. More info on the myspace.

Some more goodies I can't be bothered to go into detail describing Tongue

Atavist
http://www.myspace.com/atavist

Caina
http://www.myspace.com/cainaband

That's all for now, but I'll probs be back with more soon. Sign of the devil dude!

If you want to go back and discover some of the earliest extreme metal in existence in Sweden I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the following:

Mefisto - The Truth

A compilation of both their 1986 demos "Megalomania" and "The Puzzle." They play a form of black/death/thrash and I'd put them in the extreme thrash category overall. However this band was highly influential in the Swedish scene and I honestly wonder how they've escaped my attention for so long. This is some amazing shit, and this compilation was released in '99 and I believe is OOP (found one on eBay and I'm watching it, but I expect it to go up). This beast is begging for another re-issue.

I found a documentary made last year called "Global Metal" that was really interesting. The trailer can be found here

http://www.globalmetalfilm.com/global-metal-01.html

I watched the whole thing (in several parts) on youtube...you may be able to find the entire film elsewhere...I enjoyed it...worth a watch if you love Metal...as we all do, obviously.
I think what impressed me the most was the segment on India. They highlihted a few Indian metal bands that I looked up and they were all actually very impressive...Demonic Resurrection, Kryptos, and Exhumation. Demonic Resurrection has a new album coming out in just a few weeks...I'm looking forward to it after what I have heard so far.
